Adam Darski, born in Poland, is the founder, leader singer and primary song writer for the blackened death metal band Behemoth. Popularly known as ‘Nergal’, on stage, Adam Darski also plays the guitar for his band.
Adam and Behemoth are recognized by experts to have contributed significantly to the Polish underground metal scene.
Adam Darski – Blackened Death Metal Pioneer
Adam Darski and Behemoth – The Initial Days
Though Adam has been part of other heavy metal bands on and off, he is best associated with the Behemoth of which he is one of the founding members. A musical genius, Adam was a proficient guitarist by the age of 8.
And such was his passion for music and his confidence in himself that Adam had formed his own band while still in his teens. Thus with two other band members, the Behemoth was born in 1991.
The Journey from Black Metal to Blackened Death Metal
Heavy metal has evolved over a period of time and has spawned several sub genres, including black metal and death metal. Though there are many similarities in their sounds, the technicalities in these genres differ and a true metal fan (such as you) can easily distinguish one from the other.
Behemoth started initially as a black metal band, and released three albums in this niche, which met with moderate success. The turning point came in 1998, with their 4th album Satanica which had lyrical themes veering towards the occult, courtesy lyricist Adam Darski. With Satanica, the black metal sound of the band had evolved into blackened death metal.
Since then there has been no looking back for Behemoth and Adam Darski and the band is regarded as one of the pioneers in the blackened death metal genre.
Behemoth has been variously labeled as black metal, death metal or blackened death metal. Interestingly, Adam has made known his disapproval of such labels. Perhaps, in his heart, something as creative and free flowing as music cannot be categorized and restricted within the boundaries of genres.
Adam Darski Fights Death
In 2010, at the height of his popularity, Adam was diagnosed with leukemia. Reports at the time suggested that it was too late for treatment. But in his trademark style Adam has beaten death. With bone marrow transplant and other procedures, Adam has now recovered completely. The band is currently working on their tenth album, slated for release in mid 2013.
The truly gifted never go away. They merely take a break and come back stronger than ever. And this is what has happened to Adam Darski.
